Vegetarians, vegans and curious onlookers flock to this annual food festival held on Saturday, November 1st this year.
This year marks the 13th annual event organized by the Boston Vegetarian Society. From vendor food samples to speaker presentations this free event draws a large crowd of vegans, vegetarians and the just plain curious folks. At times the event can be very crowded so attendees should plan to show up early and be patient as the explore the many facets of a meatless lifestyle. Vegetarian VendorsAt the food festival 100 vendors will offer samples, discounts and educational materials to attendees. For example, at the 2007 event, tables ranged from vegan clothing and accessories to cupcakes to vegan skincare products and vegan ice cream. Some seasoned festival goers bring a recycled shopping bag to carry pamphlets and samples home. Exhibitors offer only vegan food samples - free of animal products including dairy and eggs. Most tables offer products discounted for the festival to encourage visitors to purchase something they have sampled. Festival SpeakersThe free speaker presentations are very popular amongst long-time vegetarians and vegans as well as newcomers and those interested in learning more about meatless diets. Speakers may present topics relevant to vegan and vegetarian causes – such as animal cruelty or research on meatless diets. Others offer cooking demonstrations in their presentations. The 2008 speakers will include presentations on desserts without dairy and eggs, the way animal agriculture affects the environment and a research project on plant-based diets from China. Getting to the FestivalThe Boston Vegetarian Food Festival is accessible by public transportation as well as by car. Parking can be crowded but there are two lots for general free parking and one lot for free handicap parking. Visitors should give themselves ample time to find parking to avoid running late to a presentation.
