Truro is located on the Outer Cape Cod in Massachusetts. This town features amazing beaches, a vineyard and beautiful vistas.

Established in 1709 Truro Massachusetts turns 300 years old on July 16, 2009. An Outer Cape Cod town, Truro is best known as a summer vacation community. But it is one of the sleepiest towns on the Cape so Truro is a great destination for beachgoers and ‘city folk’ looking for some quiet time.

Traveling to Truro by car is about a two hour drive from the city of Boston. A ferry service is also available between Boston and Provincetown, a short drive from Truro. Bicycles are very popular on the Cape and can be a convenient way of getting around the small towns, beaches, restaurants and shops.

Staying in Truro

Reservations are required well in advance during peak season months anywhere on Cape Cod. Here are some unique places to stay that will accommodate a variety of needs:

  • Cape View Motel - 364 Route 6, North Truro, MA 02652, 800-224-3232 – this little place has an amazing view of Provincetown and Cape Cod Bay. Accommodations are fairly basic and the rooms are dated, but the staff is very friendly, and the pool is great for a quick dip.
  • Crow's Nest Resort - P.O. Box 177, North Truro, MA 02652 800-499-9799 – luxury accommodations, and right on the beach.
  • North of Highland Camping Area - 52 Head of the Meadow Road, P.O. Box 297, North Truro, MA 02652, 508-487-1191 – has campsites available for reservations.

Visiting Truro’s Beautiful Beaches

Parking is the biggest obstacle for beachgoers in Truro. Only one of Truro’s beaches has free parking, High Head Beach, this one is off Route 6 at the end of High Head Road. Two beaches are available for cash parking: Corn Hill Beach off Corn Hill Road, this one faces Cape Cod Bay, and Head of the Meadow off Head of the Meadow Road. All other beaches require a paid parking sticker.

To obtain a parking sticker the Truro beachgoer will need to bring a statement from his motel that verifies he is visiting overnight. He will also need to bring in his vehicle registration. Stickers are valid for one week and can be purchased at the Beach Office located at 36 Shore Road, North Truro, MA 02652, 508-487-6983.

To ensure a parking place go early in the morning and pack a lunch picnic. Truro beaches are also beautiful to visit in the evening to watch the sunset, and are less crowded during this time.

Where to Eat

Truro isn’t the Mecca for restaurants but it has some really good eateries within the town limits. A couple of easy-to-miss spots:

  • Babe’s Mediterranean Bistro - 69 Shore Road, North Truro, MA 02652, 508-487-9955 – their Sunday brunch is unbeatable. Babe’s serves up delicious morning fare with fresh ingredients and warm hospitality. They are also known for their popular dinner, so call in advance to get your table.
  • Whitman House and Bass Tavern - 5 Great Hollow Road, Truro, MA 02666, 508-487-1740 – the Bass Tavern is a great spot for lunch or dinner. Very moderate prices on the Tavern’s menu for seafood.

Must See While Staying in Truro

In addition to the beautiful beaches and great views from the hilltops a stay in Truro would not be complete without a visit to the Truro Vineyards. Located at 11 Shore Road, Route 6A, in North Truro, Memorial Day through Columbus Day provides visitors a free tour of this unique vineyard. Hear about the temperate climate and unique soil that makes some very tasty grapes for winemaking. Visitors even get to see the oak barrels and processing equipment. After the tour a small wine tasting fee will get the wine enthusiast a taste of several of the vineyard’s own wines.

For a little nightlife take a drive down Route 6 to Provincetown and enjoy a lazy stroll on the boardwalks watching the sunset. Or skip some beach stones into the ocean at dusk.
