Jacob Wirth Restaurant has been a Boston favorite since the late 1800's. This German Restaurant is located in the heart of the theater district, near Chinatown. A historic restaurant, Wirths opened in 1878, and is the second oldest restaurant in Boston. The oldest Boston restaurant is also America's oldest restaurant. Union Oyster House, which is a National Historic Landmark, was established in 1826. Union Oyster House is on the historic Freedom Trail, one block from Faneuil Hall.
The restaurant founder, Jacob Wirth, came from a family of wine growers in Prussia. He immigrated to America in 1868 and opened his restaurant in 1878. The dining room was made up of simple tables made of mahogany. Large steins and bottles from Germany served as decorations. The notable bar was a long mahogany structure that was equipped to dispense draught beers. .Hearty German fare included sausages, hams, cheeses and herrings.
Founder Jacob Wirth passed away in 1892. His son, who shared his name, took over the family business. The bar/restaurant flourished, even through tough times when Germans were vilified during the World Wars. The bar survived Prohibition, which was an era that closed down many bars.
The Fitzgerald family took over the restaurant in 1975. They have restored the exterior to look like it did when it was first opened.
The menu offers appetizers, soups, salads, entrees and Jacob Wirth Classics. The classics include Wiener Schnitzel, Jaeger Schnitzel, German Mixed Grill and Sauerbraten. Small Plates offer smaller portions of entrees, including Crab Cakes, Sausages, Wiener Schnitzel, Jaeger Schnitzel and Sauerbraten. American food includes a variety of burgers, salads and sandwiches. Desserts may include Cherry Apple Strudel, Ginger Cream Brulee, Chocolate Lava Cake, Warm Apple Pie Sandwich and Pumpkin Cheesecake.
The Kid's Menu features kid friendly food, such as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches and macaroni & cheese.
