St. Patrick's Day Events in Boston

Music and Dance, Theater, and a Murder Mystery To Solve Over Dinner

Feb 14, 2009 Cynthia Riede

Beyond the annual parade in South Boston and the pints of green beer, there are other Irish-themed events happening around town to celebrate all things Irish.

From traditional Celtic dance and music to plays penned by a contemporary Irishman to an Irish-American murder mystery dinner, Boston is the place to celebrate all things Irish for St. Patrick's Day.

A St. Patrick's Day Celtic Sojourn with Brian O'Donovan

Put on the green and join WGBH's Brian Donovan, host of the radio program A Celtic Sojourn, along with some of the best singers, musicians, and dancers from around the world for an evening of traditional and contemporary Irish music and dance at Berklee College of Music. Performers include Irish-born folk singer Maura O'Connell; the Lochrann ensemble, a group of talented young musicians from around Ireland; Celtic harp duo Grainne Hambly and Billy Jackson; and others. This is certain to be an evening of lively and engaging Irish-themed entertainment.

Black Box Theatre: Swansong & Bottom of the Lake

Hankering for an evening of contemporary Irish theatre? Tir Na Theatre Company brings two one-act plays by Conor McDermottroe to Boston at the Black Box Theatre. His award winning Edinburgh Fringe Festival one-man show, Swansong, has been a sell-out success in Dublin, Edinburgh, and London. Featuring Tim Ruddy, Swansong is a "vivid and bruising picture of life in the west of Ireland in the 1960's." (The Times) Bottom of the Lake, McDermottroe's second play, takes place on New Year's Eve, with sixteen-year old Raymnie Armstrong and elderly angler Joesie sitting in a boat, threading bait through hooks. McDermottroe's work has been described as having "guttural lyricism...intellectual clarity, and...a vivid compassion." (Sunday Independent)

Thursday, February 26 through Saturday, March 14. Weekday and weekend evening shows; Sunday afternoon shows.

Tickets: $28.00, general admission.

Mystery Café: Irish-American Homicidal

If solving a murder mystery over dinner is one's Irish cup of tea, Mystery Café is the place. Performed at the Elephant & Castle Restaurant & Pub in a four-scene style with three delicious courses served by the characters in between (an appetizer; choice of entrée - Stuffed Chicken Breast, Penne Alfredo, or Sirloin Steak; and dessert), Irish-American Homicidal (a St. Patrick's Day special at the Mystery Café) is said to be hilarious and fun entertainment. Guests will be given a clue packet and some Bribe money to help them on their way to playing Sleuth. So, a person dies, right there. Everyone sees it, but no one is sure who the killer is. Whilst talking amongst other dinner guests, someone will figure out "who did it" over dinner. Did someone say "impromptu Irish wake?" Sounds like fun.

Saturdays, March 7-March 28. 7:30PM.

Tickets: $49.95 (per individual)
