North of Boston Fairgrounds at Topsfield FairAmerica’s Oldest Agricultural Fair in Northern Massachusetts
The oldest agricultural fair celebrates 190 years at its permanent location in Topsfield, Massachusetts, on the East Coast of the United States.
Known as America’s Oldest Agricultural Fair this annual harvest event has been running since 1818 with exceptions in its history for the Civil War and World War II. The fair is organized by the Essex Agriculture Society, which has owned and run the annual event since its inception. Located in Topsfield, Massachusetts, the fair is a short drive North of Boston. The present-day Topsfield Fair is an event that draws thousands of visitors each year. From amusement rides to horse shows the fair entertains young and old. Perennial FavoritesRobinson’s Racing Pigs – a cute pig show featuring a race track and small swim pool that the pigs must get through. Always draws a crowd so spectators should arrive early to get a good place to watch. Hallamore Clydesdales – these spectacular beasts can weigh up to 2,000 pounds each! The Hallamore team is an eight-horse Clydesdale team that pulls an authentic wood wagon. Giant Pumpkin Contest – this annual event is sure to surprise as pumpkins weighing over 1,000 pounds are entered and judged. The winning pumpkin is on display in the Fruit and Vegetable building. Bee Building – children of all ages love to explore the bee hive displays displayed under plexiglass. Jars of honey from golden yellow to dark amber are featured on the back wall and make-your-own-beeswax-candles are available in the craft area. Sheep and Goats – in the Sheep and Goat barn visitors can pet a lamb, feed a kid goat or watch a goat milking or sheep shearing demonstration. Volunteers are happy to answer questions at the petting table where one or two rabbits are available to be touched.
