Communities in the Northeast USA will host many parades on Thanksgiving Day.

Parades have become a tradition during the Thanksgiving holiday. Early on many of these parades were held on Thanksgiving Day; but over the years, several cities moved their parades to either the weekend before or the day after Thanksgiving. Those looking to attend a parade on Thanksgiving Day need not fret. One can still find many parades taking place in communities throughout the northeast.

Thanksgiving Parades in the Midwest

Detroit, MI - America's Thanksgiving Parade has been a tradition in Detroit for nearly 80 years. The theme for this year's parade is "Legends and Lollipops". Spectators will enjoy appearances from the unforgettable Big Head Corps (a paper mache head collection), the Distinguished Clown Corp, various marching bands, floats and grand helium balloons.

Chicago, IL - The McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade is a favorite Thanksgiving tradition for many in the Midwest. There will be floats, marching bands, cheerleaders/dancers and giant inflatables. In celebration of their 75th anniversary, the parades organizers have planned for many special guests including wrestler CM Punk, the Budweiser Clydesdales, Ronald McDonald and of course Santa Claus.

St. Louis, MO - The St. Louis community will celebrate Thanksgiving with its annual Ameren St. Louis Thanksgiving Day Parade. Features of the parade include bands, floats, giant balloons, dancers and various performers. Louie the Lightning Bug, a giant inflatable promoting electrical safety for kids, is a favorite of the St. Louis parade.

Thanksgiving Parades on the East Coast

New York, NY - The Macy's Parade is perhaps the most well known of the Thanksgiving Day Parades in the United States. Held in New York City, the Macy's parade features the nation's best marching bands, spectacular floats, giant balloon characters, equestrians, dancers and appearances by various celebrities. The parade typically commences with an opening performance and concludes with the appearance from Santa Claus.

Philadelphia, PA - The 6ABC/IKEA Boscov's Thanksgiving Day Parade will be held along Benjamin Franklin Parkway in downtown Philadelphia. Parade spectators will enjoy several parade favorites including giant character balloons, theme floats, marching bands and various performances. Parade organizers have announced the appearance of celebrity guests including actor Mario Lopez and the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders.

Most parades are scheduled to begin between 8 a.m. - 9 a.m. It is advisable to visit the parades website to find out more about the parade route and strategize for a good location. Although the weather will be slightly different in each city, it is highly likely that the day may be a little brisk and chilly. Consequently, it is advisable to dress warm and preferably in layers.
